About us > Carbon Neutral

Carbon offsetting offers us a way to reduce the emissions that we are unable to control or eliminate ourselves. It both helps to combat global climate change as well as caring for local communities; in many instances providing much needed employment, health improvement, biodiversity and broad social benefits to impoverished communities.

How are we carbon neutral?

We are offsetting all our carbon emissions from the moment the green beans arrive on our roastery floor to the point they are delivered to our customers’ front doors. In our case, that’s 63 tonnes of carbon dioxide. We have chosen to do this by partnering with the Portel-Para REDD project, which is located in the Brazilian Amazon, the largest remaining rainforest on earth.

The Amazon is known for its amazing biodiversity; home to 10% of all species, including some endangered species that rely on it for their survival. The area’s diversity is important not only for its ecology, but for the socio-economic importance of species such as Brazil nut trees.

About the REDD project

The REDD project is working to prevent unplanned deforestation in native forests, which has occurred due to logging, squattering and attempts to implement pastures. The project is expected to avoid over 22 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent greenhouse gas emissions over a 40 year period. This will be achieved by managing the land in the form of a "private conservation reserve".

The project is approved to CCB Standards Second Edition, Climate Adaptation & Biodiversity Gold Level. This accreditation guarantees the transparency and accuracy of carbon accounting. The Gold level award is an additional guarantee of exceptional social and environmental benefit, which for the REDD project includes the creation of new jobs and training in forest management and the protection of critical biodiversity habitats.
